How to Inspect a Used Car Before You Buy

A viewing is an opportunity to ask questions and compare the car with its advertised details. An inspection can inform a decision, but it cannot promise that every issue will be found.

Start with the available history

Ask which service records and supporting documents are available. Compare the recorded details with the listing and ask about gaps or anything you do not understand.

Look over the exterior and tyres

Walk around the car in good light. Note differences in bodywork, visible wear and tyre condition, then ask the seller about anything that needs explanation.

Try the cabin controls

Check the equipment that matters to you and make sure the seating position is comfortable. Discuss warning lights or controls that do not behave as expected.

Plan a test drive and review

Arrange a permitted test drive with the seller, review the available terms and consider an independent inspection before deciding. Keep a note of unanswered questions.
